Big News in Baseball and Our Self-Worth

Josh Merrill

Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
– Luke 12:17 (ESV)

As we step up to the plate this season, we’re greeted with the incredible news many of you may have heard of being Shohei Ohtani’s landmark 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This $700 million contract is not just a testament to Ohtani’s exceptional talent as a baseball star but also a reminder of the high stakes and rewards in professional sports.

Reflecting on Our Worth

In the glow of such monumental achievements like this and others, we can sometimes look at these stories and compare. Maybe even look inward and ponder our own value. How do we measure up? Are our contributions significant in what we do? It’s here that we must remember to turn to the Bible, which offers profound insights into our worth as God’s children.

The Scriptures remind us that our value isn’t tied to worldly success or failure. Isaiah 43:4 tells us, “Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you”, and Luke 12:7 shares, “In fact, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” These two verses, along with many others, assure us that our worth is inherent, given by God, and not dependent on our accomplishments or our works.

God and Sports: A Parallel of Faith

The world of sports often mirrors our own  journey. Just as athletes trust in their abilities and their team day to day, we are called to place our faith in God’s plan and wisdom for our lives. The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance seen in sports can inspire us in our walk with Christ and connect God to our game and in everything we do.

Encouragement for Athletes and Coaches

To all athletes, coaches, and sports ministries, let this news uplift you. Your worth is immeasurable in the eyes of the Lord. As you strive for excellence on the field, remember that your identity is rooted not in the trophies you lift but in the grace and love of our Savior.

Let us all embrace the new season with hope and faith, knowing that we are all valuable players in God’s team.

Blessings,

The Eternity Sports Team
