Competing Strong In The New Year While Centered in Christ

Josh Merrill

As we step into a new year, 2026 brings fresh goals, renewed motivation, and the familiar desire to improve like stronger training habits, better performance, and greater discipline. For athletes, the new year often feels like a reset button. But as we chase growth on the field, in the gym, or on the court, scripture reminds us that our physical efforts are never separate from our spiritual lives. Everything we do including how we train our bodies can reflect our faith.

The apostle Paul gives us a powerful reminder, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). This truth reframes how athletes view their bodies. Your strength, endurance, and ability to compete are not simply tools for performance, they are gifts entrusted to us by God. When we understand that our bodies are temples, training becomes more than preparation for a game; it becomes an act of stewardship.

Every athlete understands discipline. Performance doesn’t happen by accident as it’s built through consistent training, intentional recovery, and wise choices. Honoring God with our bodies means approaching those disciplines with purpose. Training hard, pushing limits, and striving for excellence are not opposed to faith; they are opportunities to glorify God through effort, resilience, and commitment. When we show up prepared and disciplined, we reflect the character of the One we represent.

At the same time, honoring God with our bodies isn’t about perfection. It’s about faithfulness. It’s choosing stewardship over neglect, discipline over laziness, and gratitude over entitlement. Rest becomes just as important as work. Fueling our bodies well becomes an act of respect, not restriction. Even listening to our limits can be a form of obedience, recognizing that our worth is not defined by constant output but by who we belong to in Christ.

As you move through this year chasing goals, planning for your ministry, training hard, and competing with passion, pause and reflect on how your physical life points back to your faith. Are your habits drawing you closer to God or pulling you away from Him? Are you using your body as a platform to honor Christ in both victory and struggle? In 2026, may our pursuit of excellence be rooted not just in performance, but in a desire to glorify God with everything we’ve been given.

Reflection Question:
Are you honoring God with how you steward your body this season?
