Before discussing “how” to bring God glory in our sports, we should satisfy ourselves with the question, “can we bring God glory in sports?” This may seem like a slam dunk question, but I have been in countries where sports for ministry was not considered acceptable ministry. Those who held this position are wonderful Christian brothers and sisters with whom we will spend eternity.
Consider these two Scriptures
- Whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it for God’s glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31
- Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Colossians 3:23
If we can eat or drink to God’s glory, and if whatever we do we can do it with our whole heart as if we are working for the Lord; then I believe we can participate in sports with our whole heart to bring glory to our Lord. Warning! If it is possible to play sports for God’s glory it is also possible to play in a manner that dishonors God. Our enemy is a cunning opponent and he continually tries to head-fake you into playing for your own interests and your own glory.
Here are a few things to consider as you seek to play for God’s glory.
- Prayerfully and regularly ask God to check your motives (see Psalms 139:23-24). Consider enlisting the help of a Christian friend to help you see your blind spots.
- Kill the false god of winning. Winning can be used to motivate you to train and play hard, but it is a terrible taskmaster when it becomes the only way to measure success.
- Behave! Don’t be the jerk on the court or field. Again, recruit a friend to help you.
- Look for opportunities to shine the light of Jesus to opponents, teammates, officials, and spectators. Click the link below to join the Playing For Eternity Challenge and receive the free ebook, Five Ways to let God Shine in Your Game.
