Be sure to check out Kenny’s interview on the Eternity Sports podcast.
As a hooper and a slow white one at that, dunking is something that always fascinates. God has gifted us all differently and that is no different on the basketball court. Kenny Dobbs has the gift of jumping higher than most, he has hops, bounce, bunnies, boosties and any other slang you can come up with for someone who fly.
I knew who Kenny was before we meet this summer at Basketball Maui. We have some mutual friends and I of course if you follow basketball you will have most likely seen a dunk from Kenny or one watched someone do one of the dunks he created. It was great having Kenny come on the show and his testimony and enthusiasm for sharing his faith is contagious. However, what we didn’t get to talk about on the podcast was his ability to relate to the kids.
Hope Chapel & Basketball Maui celebrated their 10 year anniversary of camp this summer it was clear why they have had Kenny back almost every year for this camp. His energy and ability to connect with the kids is amazing. I’m not talking about when he takes over camp for a dunk contest. Anyone that can fly like Kenny can capture an audience, but Kenny was engaging and gave every bit he had for every single camper.
I’ve been running sports camps for 15 years through all different sports and its hard to find someone that can capture the attention of the youth and I believe this is a real call for Kenny. Behind the hype of the dunker, Kenny is real. He is honest about his mistakes and will be the first one to claim he is not perfect. The kids can sense his authenticity and connect with him. While sharing his faith and testimony (hear this on the podcast) the story is amazing and a real miracle.
We all come from different backgrounds and Kenny’s was not an easy one, but God has captured his heart and he desires to have people hear about Jesus. He has seen the other side and has experienced the miracle of what Jesus can do in someone’s life. Kenny is real dude trying to balance the culture of sports in our country and striving to put God in all he does. If only we could all be so bold to try. Praying Kenny’s testimony blesses others, and that we can all try.
