It’s been said that music and sports are the universal language. Why? Because pretty much anywhere you go in the world, you can find both things – music and sports. So humor me for just a minute: If that statement is true, then why shouldn’t churches seize this opportunity?
For those who can sing and produce music, we will leave that expertise to you – because, let’s be honest, nobody wants to hear me belt out a tune. So, allow me to focus on the latter of the two…SPORTS! Sports can be played in all kinds of ways and appeals to the masses. Sometimes all you need is a ball and a few people to make up the simplest of games.
I remember the few times I went to Sweden to do basketball camps, we would often take a break during the week to have some fun. This is when the Swedes decided to teach the Americans the game of Burn Ball. It was a new game to us, but little did the Swedes know, it was tailored from American baseball. They thought they were pulling a fast one on us, but we actually dominated them at their own game because of our baseball skill level. The following year we went back, and they taught us floorball (much like ice hockey, but on a floor). This time we weren’t so lucky, the Swedes dominated us, and they were back on track.
The point here is this: We learned and played two new games and connected and bonded with people from a different culture simply because of sports. Not only that, we were there to share the Good News of Jesus with people, and sports gave us the inside track we needed to build relationships. This kind of thing happens all the time. People are bonded by sports and opportunities happen that we never would dream possible.
Churches that use this platform have an incredible chance to share the Gospel through quality-run sports programming. Eternity Sports exists to help you see the value and opportunity to do such ministry. We are here to help you see the impact and capitalize on what sports provide.
Believe me when I say, there are many people on this earth that have an eternal destiny because of the way God used sports in their lives to bring them to Christ. So what are you waiting for? Let’s take your sports ministry to new heights.
