Running the Race for Eternity

Josh Merrill

The Christian life is often compared to a race. We are called to run with endurance, perseverance, and faithfulness. We are also called to run for a prize that is eternal and incorruptible. The prize is not a medal or a trophy, but the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him (James 1:12).

But how do we run the race well? How do we keep our eyes on the prize and not get distracted by the things of this world? How do we run in such a way that we glorify God and impact others for His kingdom?

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
– 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV)

Run The Race Before Us:

One way is to learn from those who have run the race before us. Hebrews 12:1 tells us to look to the cloud of witnesses who have testified of God’s faithfulness and power. These are the heroes of faith who have overcome obstacles, endured hardships, and finished their course with joy. They are examples of how to run the race with courage, conviction, and commitment.

Look To Jesus:

Another way is to look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.(Hebrews 12:2) He is the perfect runner who ran the race without sin, without wavering, and without giving up. He endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. He is the source of our strength, the model of our obedience, and the reward of our hope.

Run With A Team:

A third way is to join with others who are running the race with us. We are not meant to run alone, but to run as a team. We need each other for encouragement, accountability, and support. We need to spur one another on to love and good works. (Hebrews 10:24-25) We need to share our burdens and joys, our struggles and victories, our doubts and praises.

That’s why Eternity Sports exists. It is a ministry that connect and grows churches as well as Christian athletes and coaches who want to use their sport to not for the “here and now” and for one’s own glory—but for eternity and for God’s glory. Our ministry seeks to inspire, educate, and equip those who desire to integrate their faith and sports and glorify God in their game. We want to help you run your race well and share the message of eternal life with others.
