Stay Coachable

Josh Merrill

“Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” – Proverbs 19:20

In sports, one of the greatest assets an athlete can have isn’t just speed, strength, or skill, it’s a teachable spirit. The most successful players in history all share this quality: the willingness to listen, learn, and grow under guidance. A player who refuses correction eventually hits a ceiling. But the one who remains humble, open to instruction, and willing to be shaped will continue to rise.

The same principle applies in our walk with Jesus. God places people in our lives like coaches, mentors, teammates, family who can speak wisdom and encouragement, but also correction and discipline. Our natural pride often resists correction, but God calls us to receive it as a gift. Every time we choose humility and allow ourselves to be coached, we’re shaped more into who He created us to be.

Being “coachable” means having a posture of openness both on the field and in faith. It means asking: What can I learn from this? How can I grow? Am I willing to listen, even if it stings?

Coachability also requires trust. An athlete trusts that their coach sees something they cannot fully see on their own, potential that is still forming, weaknesses that can be strengthened, and habits that can be refined. In the same way, we are called to trust that God’s guidance is always rooted in love and purpose. Even when correction feels uncomfortable or challenges our pride, it is never meant to diminish us, but to develop us. God is not trying to hold us back; He is preparing us for greater responsibility, deeper faith, and stronger character. When we trust His voice and the people He uses to guide us, we position ourselves for growth that goes beyond our natural ability.

Reflection Question: Are you open to correction, from your coach or from God?
