Phil Dawson, freshman kicker for the University of Texas, had a spectacular season in 1994. As a result, he received many honors, one of which was being named to Playboy Magazine’s Preseason All-American team for the ’95 season.
What are you willing to forfeit in order to stand up for what is right?
As a Christian, Dawson took a courageous stand and asked the magazine to remove him from the Preseason All-American Team. He forfeited the notoriety and an all-expenses paid trip to the Playboy Mansion. Many, including some teammates, questioned his decision. Over the next 10 years many other college football and basketball stars followed Dawson’s lead and declined to be part of this list.
The Bible is full of stories of amazing courage in the face of danger – Joseph fleeing Potiphar’s wife, Daniel continuing to pray in defiance of the law, Esther risking her life to confront injustice, David going toe-to-toe with Goliath because he dared to defy the Living God, Nathan calling out King David’s sin, Mary choosing to give up her dreams to obey God’s call, and Peter preaching publicly about Jesus to the very people who had a hand in killing Jesus.
