Trusting God Through Losing Seasons and Setbacks

Josh Merrill

At Eternity Sports, we understand that losing seasons test more than skill, they test faith, perseverance, and belief in Christ’s plans for your life. Setbacks, disappointments, injuries, missed opportunities, and unmet expectations can definitely shake an athlete’s confidence and joy. When the scoreboard and setbacks does not reflect the hard work being put in, it can be easy to question progress, purpose, or even God’s plan through all the unknowns. Yet scripture reminds us that God is often doing some of His deepest work in seasons that do not look successful by the world’s standards.

Athletes understand that growth rarely happens without resistance. The hardest practices, toughest opponents, and most challenging moments often reveal areas that need strengthening. In the same way, seasons of loss can reveal our character, deepen our dependence on God, and shape us into the people He has called us to be. Romans 5:3-4 reminds us, “Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” God can use difficult seasons not to hold us back, but to build something lasting within us throughout our daily lives.

The emotional weight of losing can be heavy. A disappointing season can bring frustration, doubt, comparison, or the feeling that our efforts are unseen. But our identity was never meant to be found only in victories. Before we ever step onto a field, court, or competition stage, we are already known and loved by God. Colossians 3:23 encourages us to work wholeheartedly “as working for the Lord,” reminding us that faithfulness matters even when the results are not what we hoped for.

God is still working through the losses. A setback may teach patience, humility, resilience, or trust in ways a victory never could. The goal is not to ignore disappointment, but to invite God into it within everything we do. He can transform painful moments into opportunities for growth, leadership, and deeper faith. What even feels like a closed door may become the very season where He prepares us for what is ahead.

At Eternity Sports, we believe athletes and coaches need support that goes beyond the game. Through resources like the Ministry Library, Christian League Finder, and tools for sports ministries, we want to help believers stay encouraged and equipped in every season, not just the winning ones. Whether you are celebrating a victory or walking through a difficult loss, remember this: God is not finished. He is faithful, He is present, and He is still working.
