Have you ever noticed how training for a sport is similar to our journey of faith? It’s not just about the physical aspect, but also about the mental and spiritual discipline. Just like athletes, we as Christians need to train ourselves to stay on the right path with God throughout the ups and downs of life.
Think about it. Athletes train hard, pushing their bodies to the limit to achieve their goals. They don’t give up when things get tough. Instead, they persevere, keeping their eyes on the prize. Isn’t that what we’re called to do in our faith journey, too?
Two Essential Requirements of an Athlete
We’re all running the race, not merely a physical one, but a spiritual one. And just like in a race, we need to keep moving forward no matter how hard it gets. We need to keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). To keep Him in the forefront of our life also indeed takes discipline and perseverance just like it requires of an athlete.
Therefore, James 1:12 reminds us that, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
It’s of course, not always easy. There will be obstacles and challenges along the way. But remember, God is with us every step of the way. He gives us the strength to keep going, even when we feel like giving up.
More Than Conquerors
So let’s run this race with endurance, keeping our eyes on Jesus. He’s the ultimate prize, and with Him, we’re more than conquerors. Let’s train ourselves in godliness, for it holds promise for the present life and the life to come.
How can you persevere through trials within your life circumstances right now? In whatever you’re going through, remember to rely on God’s Word and hold fast to the promise that the Lord is always with you. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
