When the Roster Changes: Trusting God in Every Season

Neal Gosset

The major league baseball All-Star game is played every year. However, one thing that has never happened, the exact same team has never been fielded to play the game. For as long as this game has been played, the team is drastically different from year to year. This phenomenon happens every year because players perform differently. One year they can be on top of the world and be on the team while the next year, they may not even make the All-Star roster. Players come and go, and rosters change and this trend will certainly continue.

I believe this is a good reminder to all of us because it applies to our own lives. In a lot of ways, are we just like these baseball players? We perform at high levels and sometimes we get results, while other seasons of life, we just can’t seem to get any momentum.

As we strive to make our sports ministries better and more effective, we have to know that we are going to go through seasons of ups and downs. In times like this, it also important to remember the powerful verse Proverbs 3:5-6… “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God’s word reminds us of this ancient truth. So, hold onto the hope when things are down, hopefully they’re only down for a temporary period. Just like an All-Star that is on top of their game, we know the top can be short lived. That is why we must trust in our Lord in all we do.
